Privacy
Your privacy, in plain terms
What this website collects, what it does not, and who can see it. Reaching out to WALAL does not put your name on a list.
Start here: peer support itself is not covered by this page. If you reach out to WALAL for support, that conversation is handled under our confidentiality practices. WALAL is independent of the Washington State Bar Association and the courts. No diagnosis is required, and we do not create clinical records. See Confidentiality for the full explanation.
This page covers one narrower thing: the data this website handles.
What this site collects
1. The contact form
The form on our home page asks for four things: request type, your message, how you prefer to be contacted, and contact details.
You decide what goes in "contact details" - an email address, a phone number, or a first name only. You do not have to give us your full name, your firm, or your bar number.
Where it goes: a notification email to a WALAL peer support volunteer, plus a stored submission in this site's Squarespace account. Nothing you send is published on the site.
2. Email you send us
info@walal.org is an ordinary mailbox. If you email us, we have your message and whatever address you sent it from.
3. Anonymous usage analytics
We use Google Analytics to see which pages people read, roughly what region a visit came from, what kind of device was used, and whether someone clicked an email link or submitted the contact form. This is aggregate and is not tied to your name. We use it to learn which pages actually help people, and to measure our outreach.
4. Standard hosting data
This site is hosted by Squarespace, which keeps normal web server logs and sets the cookies the site needs to function. Squarespace's own privacy notice governs that.
What this site does not do
- We do not sell, rent or trade your information. Not to anyone, not ever.
- We do not share it with the WSBA, the courts, your employer, your firm, or any disciplinary body.
- We do not require your name in order to help you.
- We do not run third-party advertising on this site and we do not place advertising trackers on it.
- We do not knowingly collect information from anyone under 13.
Donations
You can give in two ways, and they handle your information differently.
Zeffy
Processed by Zeffy, on Zeffy's own system, inside a form embedded on our site. WALAL never sees or stores your card number - that transaction is governed by Zeffy's privacy policy. We receive your name and the amount so we can thank you and keep proper nonprofit records.
Zelle
Zelle moves money directly between your bank and ours, through your own banking app. WALAL never sees your card or account number, and we do not operate Zelle - your bank's terms and Zelle's own terms govern the transfer.
What does reach us is whatever your bank sends with it: normally your name, the amount, and anything you type in the memo. A Zelle gift is therefore not anonymous to us. If you would rather give without your name attached, email us first and we will find another way.
Zelle gifts are not receipted automatically. If you email us your confirmation to request a receipt, we keep that email as a donation record.
Links to other organizations
We link out to resources we trust, including a confidential self-screening tool hosted by Mental Health America. Those organizations are independent of WALAL. Once you leave walal.org, their privacy policy applies instead of ours, and we never receive your answers to any screening tool.
Cookies and opting out
Essential cookies come from Squarespace. Analytics cookies come from Google Analytics. You can opt out of Google Analytics on every site you visit by installing Google's opt-out browser add-on, or by browsing in a private window.
How long we keep things
We keep contact form submissions and emails only as long as we need them to respond to you and to maintain continuity of support, and we review them periodically. If you want your message deleted, ask us and we will delete it.
Your choices
Email info@walal.org to ask what we hold about you, to correct it, or to have it deleted. You can also simply tell us to stop contacting you, and we will.
Changes to this policy
If we change this policy, we will update the date below.
