Feed Your Happy Hormones explores the science behind the four key brain chemicals that influence health: dopamine, oxytocin, serotonin, and endorphins (DOSE). In this practical guide, Leslie Hagin of Washington Lawyers Assisting Lawyers (WALAL) explains how these natural mood-boosting chemicals affect motivation, emotional well-being, relationships, stress resilience, and overall health. You’ll also discover simple, evidence-based daily habits that can naturally support healthy brain chemistry, improve productivity, reduce stress, and promote a more balanced life.
Basics
Dopamine: Think Motivation and Reward
Helps you feel motivated to pursue goals and reinforces rewarding behaviors.
Oxytocin: Think Connection and Trust
Sometimes called the bonding hormone.
Serotonin: Think Mood and Emotional Stability
Influences mood, digestion, and sleep.
Endorphins: Think Natural Pain Relief
Help reduce pain and promote feelings of well-being.
Specific Deficiencies and Improvements
Even small (“micro”) adjustments can improve DOSE levels, and combat deficiencies. They can also improve productivity. For example:
| Brain chemical | Signs of Deficiency | Ways to Naturally Increase Levels |
|---|---|---|
| Dopamine | Low motivation, fatigue, difficulty concentrating, reduced pleasure, lack of drive | Set and achieve small goals, exercise regularly, eat protein-rich foods (tyrosine sources like eggs, fish, beans), get adequate sleep, listen to music you enjoy, celebrate accomplishments |
| Oxytocin | Feeling disconnected, lonely, difficulty trusting others, reduced sense of bonding | Spend quality time with loved ones, hug or hold hands (when welcomed), pet a dog or cat, perform acts of kindness, engage in meaningful conversations, practice gratitude |
| Serotonin | Low mood, anxiety, irritability, sleep problems, appetite changes | Get sunlight or sunlamp (15–30 minutes daily when possible), exercise, eat a balanced diet including foods containing tryptophan (turkey, eggs, dairy, seeds, nuts), spend time in nature, maintain regular sleep |
| Endorphins | Increased sensitivity to pain, feeling emotionally flat, reduced stress resilience | Moderate to vigorous exercise, laughter, dancing, listening to music, spicy foods (for some people), dark chocolate in moderation, massage, creative activities |
